To have a better understanding of this post, I recommend you first read the following: Hill Harper – Letter from a “Mother of a Young Brother”
A visit to see my daughter was an outstanding weekend. I was scheduled to see her perform with the dance/step team she is apart of “Movement”, in which they did a phenomenal job. I arrived a day early and attended Northwestern’s 4th annual State of the Black Union Address. The guest speaker was Hill Harper, best known for his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on CSI: NY in which he won two NAACP Image awards for an Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series in 2008 and 2009. He also won two NAACP Image awards for his bestseller book “Letters To A Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny”. I could go on and on but it would take me off track with the purpose of this blog.
Hill was very dynamic in interacting with his audience by stepping off of the stage and delivering much of his address up close and personal. He spoke of many things, which included the three components to good leadership in society, which are passion, reason and courage. What really hit home was when he quoted his former classmate President Barack Obama’s idea of “Expanding Our Circle of Care”. He continued by saying “We have to expand our own individual family circle, our own individual community, our own individual State and our own individual race, because it’s not just about black folks it’s about all folks”. It touched me because I experienced his expansion. He reached out to a Mother’s cry for help with her young adult son and that mother was me.
As I said in my last blog on Hill Harper Hill Harper – Letter from a “Mother of a Young Brother”, God will put people in your life with good reason, only this time, I knew I was given the opportunity to be put in his life to thank him personally. The bonus was at the conclusion, during Q&A, Hill Harper, learned that my daughter was a Senior Majoring in Electrical Engineering, and said “Fantastic!” to my daughter. After answering her question he inquired on her Grad School plans and went on to tell my daughter that he was proud of her!
The honor was the opportunity to personally thank Hill for reaching out to my son and myself. In retrospect, my son, my daughter, and myself are products of Hill Harper “Expanding His Circle of Care”. If that is not validation, I don’t know what is….what a blessing!
I’m SMarchel and Blog on it! It’s my Opinion!
